Reichelt families - Silesia Prussia to Australia

Johann married Ernestine Karoline ZAHN, daughter of ___________________ and ____________ ____________, in _____-_____-1845 in Groditzberg Schlesien Prussia. Ernestine was born on 25 February 1826 in Grodziec Schlesien Preussia, died on 28 August 1907 in Friedrichswalde (Tarnma) South Australia at age 81, and was buried _____-August 1907 in Tarnma South Australia. They had seven children: Friedrich Wilhelm, Johann "Hermann," Johann Heinrich "Harry," Emilie Pauline, Ernstine Pauline, Ernst Friedrich and August Albert.

Johann Gottlieb Reichelt - aged 30 - shoemaker, (native of Silesia near Bunzlau in Germany) - with his wife Ernestine Caroline (nee Zahn) (29) and children Friedrich Wilhelm (8) and Johann Hermann (1) from Groditzburg Prussia (grodziec south west Poland) sailed on the "Peter Godeffroy" from Hamburg Germany on 2 July 1855 and arrived at Port Adelaide South Australia on 18 November 1855. These people had never seen the sea before, let alone travel on it all that distance. Unlike the earlier Lutheran migrants who came to South Australia because of the need for religious freedom, Gottlieb and his family migrated more for economic reasons and to be part of the development of this land.

Their migration was done with a great faith and trust in God. The most probable reason would have been the glowing reports from migrants in Australia to their relatives in Europe, coupled with the economic and social conditions prevailing at that time. The conditions of the lower classes were deplorable and intolerable. Wages were very low and droughts and depressions affected the farmers and society in general. Tradesmen had to work long hours, and women and children went to work to supplement the income.

Even though the German emigrants had to pay passage money, purchase land, set up a new home and business the economic situation was good. Prospects of a bright future in this "new sunny land where there was no snow and where crops grew vigorously" were very encouraging.

Gottlieb was a shoemaker by trade but decided to buy his own farming land. The family travelled beyond the Barossa Valley to the farming area of Tothill Creek near the then-known Friedrichswalde (later changed to Tarnma, an aboriginal word for honeysuckle). Friedrichswalde was a small village between Eudunda and Marrabel. The locally was called Little Plains but as the Silesian settlers arrived it was changed to Friedrichswalde (Frederick's Wood, or forest).

Farmers who took up new land at this time generally rented the land for a speculator or wealthy pastoralist who had purchased large areas of land when it was first offered by the Crown.

Gottlieb is recorded to have obtained legal claim to his first area of land, just 79 acres (almost 32ha) on December 24 1855. He eventually owned six sections.

Gottlieb and Ernestine saw the need to become naturalized and on March 7th 1867 Johann Gottlieb Reichelt (aged 42) of Friedrichswalde, near Kapunda became an Australian citizen in Adelaide SA, obtaining the rights and privilege of a natural born British subject. Before his naturalization he was regarded as a foreigner and could not become an official land owner.

Gottlieb and Ernestine had 5 more children, the last born in 1868. There were now five sons and one daughter living.

The Celtic population of this area were named Helvetians by the Romans, who conquered this region by 15 B.C. Between 300 and 500, Alemannen tribes swept down from the north and conquered the northern and eastern part of Switzerland. The south-western part of Switzerland was ruled by the Burgundians, who settled in France. In 600, the Franks took control of almost all of Switzerland, and most of this region then belonged to the Ducky of Swabia, except for the south-west region under Burgundian domination. The Bungundy peoples became romanized, and they now speak French, a language division that remains today. During the mediaeval period, those with the surname Reichelt were located in Switzerland, where the name contributed greatly to the development of an emerging nation, and would later play a large role in the tribal and national conflicts of the area. In later years the name branched into many houses, each playing a significant role in the local social and political affairs. As a family name changes and evolves in the course of history, major variations in spelling and pronunciation become commonplace. Since very few people could read or write during the Middle Ages, scribes could only record the name as it sounded, which changed the way the name was spelled from region to region. We found several variations of the name Reichelt, and they were Reich, Reiche, Reichs, Reicher, Reicke, Reicker, Reichers, Rike, Ryke, Rycke, Reichle, Reichel, Riker, Rikker to name a few examples. In 1033 the Kingdom of Burgundy joined the Holy Roman Empire, and when it became a part of France in the 1300’s, the Helvetian part remained Swiss. The Austrian House of Habsburg had their original seat in Switzerland and they gained control of their homeland in 1278. Their policies provoked a rebellion among the ancient cantons of Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden. They made a famous oath in 1291 to protect their freedom, refusing to “salute the Governor’s hat on a pole”. The legend of William Tell tells the story of this revolt: William, who refused to salute the symbol of the Governor’s authority, was forced to split the apple that had been placed on his son’s head by the cruel Governor by shooting at his own son with an arrow from his own crossbow. He split the apple without harming his son, then turned on the Governor and killed him, thus starting the successful battle for independence. The taker of the oath (the “Eidgenossen”) defeated the Emperor’s forces in 1315, and also a superior Austrian force in 1386. The mountains of Switzerland proved to be a major obstacle to a conquering army, not to mention the Swiss reputation for military efficiency. By 1499 a further dozen cantons had joined the Swiss Confederacy, and Switzerland was officially recognised as independent by the Treat of Westphalia in 1648. In this period of development and transition, those of the name Reichelt moved to Franconia, on the banks of the Rhine, where they continued to be an important contributor to the life of Europe in the Middle Ages, From the 16rth century onwards the name branched to Swabia, Ravensburg, St Gallen, Languedoc, Tyrol, Alsace, Brunswick, Hanover and Bavaria. They held significant positions of prestige and power, becoming involved in the struggles for political supremacy. Perhaps the oldest and most prominent branch, the Reich von Reichenstein, ruled the city Basel early in the Middle Ages. Rudolph Reich von Reichenstein was the Abbot of Dissentis in 1277, and Petrus Reich von Reichenstein became Bishop of Basel in 1286. The family’s castle near Helesheim was in ruins as early as 1356. In 1720 the Baron Paulus Reich von Reichenstein was made a count. In Bohemia, chronicles mention Conrad Reich in 1342. Of his descendants, George von Reich was in 1610 an advisor at the courts of Saxony, while Carl Friedrich was a major general in 1645. Notables of the time with the name Reichelt were Petrus Reich von Reichenstein, who was the Bishop of Basel in 1286. The Baron Paulus Reich von Reichenstein was an emissary to Austria and a Minister in Switzerland before he was made a count in 1720. During the Reformation, Switzerland was not wracked by the religious strife that devastated most of Europe; cities such as Geneva were centers of the Reformation, and John Calvin achieved great prominence as a protestant reformer, founding the branch of Protestantism that bears his name. Switzerland has also remained united despite four different languages: German, French, Raeto-Romanic and Italian. Its main industries, centered in the cities, are tourism, precision machinery and banking, which are world famous for their quality and efficiency. Many people of Swizz origin emigrated from their homeland to seek their fortune in other nations of Europe, or in the New World. In the United States they populated the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Texas and California, while in Canada settlement centered around the Prairie provinces and Ontario. Among those settlers was Thomas Reich, who sailed to New York in 1710. Among the many immigrants to follow this first settler were; Gottfried Reich who sailed to Philadelphia in 1733 ; Wilhelm Reicher to Philadelphia in 1754; Nicolaus Reichers to Frederickstown PA in 1778; J. Dederick Rikker to Mississippi in 1820; L. Didunk Rikker to New Orleans in 1820; Lewis Reichle to Philadelphia in 1840; Gottlieb Reiche to Texas which his family in 1846; and A.W. Riker to San Francisco in 1852. After their arrival at the eastern ports, many of these settlers would later join the westward migration to the new frontiers of North America. Many of the earliest settlers to Australia were convicts, transported from Britain to live and work in the penal colonies; others were offered incentives and financial assistance. In modern history, members of the surname Reichelt distinguished themselves through their contribution to society; among them were Willi Reich (1898-1980) Austrian musicologist and critic; Steve Reich (b 1936), American composer who was influenced by African and Asian music; John Theodor Reich (b. 1906) producer of Reinhardt Theatres in Vienna (1932-38) producer of the Salzburg Festival, Head of Production of the T.V. Workshop of New York, among many other positions. He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1964 and the Grand Badge of Honour in Austria in 1971. The coat of arms found for a bearer for the Reichelt surname did not include a motto. Under most heraldic authorities, a motto is an optional component of the coast of arms, and many families have chosen not to display a motto.
